This work was made as part of Arbor's annual exhibition in 2017 with the theme Australiana.
Artist Statement: I spent my youth holidaying in Port Fairy, before my parents moved up there permanently. Over the years, the holiday town has gentrified – there used to be pretty much just the ‘good bakery’, and the ‘not so good bakery’, and the requisite terrible (and empty) Chinese restaurant. Now there is a run-by-hipsters pizzeria, a taqueria, a creperie, and stylish homewares shops jostling for space. Rising rents and changing fashion can never remove two country town staples though– the op-shop and the post office (and the Chinese joint is still there, and still empty). I love rummaging through piles of doilies in the op-shop, hours of handwork marked down to $1 each. Even though I will never use them, I buy the pretty ones and stash them away; too skilfully made, too beautiful to pass up. With this piece, I feel I have now justified my hoarding of country town crafts.
The earrings are made from sterling silver and sublimation printed aluminium and are 55mm in length. They come with the handmade doily and aluminium postage stamp stand.
