Melanie Rice finds that despite our efforts to manipulate materials to a form we desire, sometimes the elements simply resist. Although the behavioural constraints of metal are narrow, and therefore predictable, repeated forging leads to unexpected and unique results. Folding metal in one direction may lead to a buckle in the other, creating an honest yet fresh outcome.
The added element of enamel returns the creative process to its mechanical predictability. Although the technical rules of enamelling are uncompromising, the possibility of colours are endless. In creating these pieces, the demands of metal and enamel directed the way Melanie envisions come to life.
With this range she wanted to re-create her inspiration; the inherently appealing forms and textures arising out of such effortless acts as scrunching paper, folding fabric and curling ribbon.
