Artist Kate Higgins was inspired by a family character from the 1870’s, Eli, and her work is about communicating ideas through precious objects, rather than speech. The original Eli was mute, and has a curiously dark story behind his efforts to communicate. Kate extracts this imagery of dark, silent and heavy moments, and internal thinking processes, to render her work in precious metals. Kate’s style is strikingly geometric, dark and angular with an Art Deco influence.
Kate completed a Bachelor of Design at CPIT in NZ in 2004, and has been training in the commercial jewellery industry in Melbourne since 2008.
